David started playing Tenor Horn in 1959, at the age of 8yrs,
with Bury Silver Band, then a Second Section band, with
his father Leslie and two brothers, John and Bob.
He was taught by Hugh Parry, who was then Musical Director
of the world famous Wingates Temperance Band.
David has always been very active within the Brass Band Movement for over 50 years.
He has been Conducting for over 30 years and has experienced of playing and Conducting
numerous bands in the United Kingdom of all sections, some of which include;

In January 1998, David became the Musical Director of
the British Aerospace (Chadderton) Band. (Championship Section) Conducting the band to a
winning performance on only their second outing.
In 2001, under his direction, Hawk Green (Marple) Band gained promotion to the 1st Section
after winning 3rd place at the North West Area Contest at Blackpool.
David has gained a fine reputation within the Brass Band movement,
as confirmed by
'4 BARSREST.COM' as,
'ONE OF THE FINEST CONDUCTORS OUTSIDE THE
CHAMPIONSHIP SECTION.'
He is the Founder and Musical Director of the CANCER RESEARCH BAND,
which is made up of numerous very well known and famous brass band personalities.
Last years band consisted of players from Richardson Fodens Band,
Hepworth (Persimmon Homes) Band, Wingates Band, Dobcross Silverand the BT Band.
Over a period of four years, the band contributed a total exceeding £4500-00 to the
Charity. Money which has been either won at March Contests or collected at the various
Concerts where the band had performed.
David is an experienced adjudicator, both in choral music and brass band music. He
adjudicated at the 1999 and 2002 C.I.S.W.O. Miners Contest at the Winter Gardens,
Blackpool, the 2002 Rhyl Music Festival, He has, for the past 8 years, adjudicated at the
O.M.B.B.A. Slow Melody Contest.
Up until 2005, he was the National Public Relations Officer with the National Association
of Brass Band Conductors but had to resign his position due to illness.
David teaches brass players and is invited annually, to direct a Master Class in Brass
playing and Brass Band Conducting in Suffolk.
In 2009, he Conducted The Granite City Brass
from Aberdeen. They won 4th place in the 2nd Section at the Scottish Area Championships at
Dundee's, Caird Hall. He also took Wetherby Silver Band to the Yorkshire Area at Bradford's
St Georges Hall, where they gained 5th place in the 3rd Section.
He has taught numerous Brass students who have moved up the ladder to the higher sections of the
Brass Band movement.
David is very proud to be the Musical Director of the Boarshurst Band and is very pleased to
have got the band back onto the Prize Winning Rostrum numerous times.
After only 18 months
under his direction, the band have won the Tameside Championships 2009 and gained 3rd place at the Buxton Festival,
the Pontins National Championships and the Wilkinsons Northern Open Championships. These results
plus the most successful Whit Friday that the band has ever competed in with 7 awards out of 8 contests entered,
have made the Boarshurst Band a total of £2700.00 in prize money and has been the best 18 months that the band have ever
had regarding Contest results.
The future looks excellent with David at the helm, hopfully for many years to come.
