News 2009.

An Very Early Present From Santa. 1st December 2009.

We are very pleased to announce that Tracey Welsh has agreed to join the band as a member of our Percussion Section.
Tracey is married to Keith who plays on the Trombone Section and is mother of Liam (Euphonium) and Abby (cornet).
Another family joins the Boarshurst Family.

What a Wonderful Contesting Year. 16th November 2009.

This year, the Boarshurst Silver Band have had a very succesful run of results.
Of the 15 contests that we entered, the band have actually won prizes at 12 of them.

The three which we did not feature in were right at the start of the year, these being Preston 7th,
Blackpool 13th and Holmfirth 5th.

However, with the contesting season starting with the Pontins contest, this means that prior to the Christmas break
we have already got two 3rds in the bank. This means that next year, when we start in the 4th Section, we will be going for as many victories as possible.

We are in the very fortunate position of having a full compliment of Brass players plus on 5 percussionists on our books. This band has been carefully built over the 18 months that our M.D. has been with us, and the final balance has now been achieved. A huge effort from this time onward is required to return to the 3rd Section as soon as possible. The main goal for next year must be qualification at the Area Contest and a good result at the National Finals and if we keep the band together there is no reason why this cannot be achieved.

The results this year have managed us to bank £2700-00. congrats to all.

Remembrance Sunday. 8th November 2009.

Once again, the Band did a splendid job of the Remembrance Service and March Past at Royton Town Hall this morning. An excellent rendition of Last Post and Revellie was played by John Whittle on the flugel horn.

In the evening, the Annual Remembrancee Concert at the Club was played to a packed house. An excellent solo by Principal Cornet, Martin Stott and an excellent Euphonium Duet from Paul Dutton and Rebecca Wood were the highlights of a marvellous concert which was very well played throughout the band. Well done to everyone.

After the concert a gentleman approached Mr Ashworth and praised him for a most wonderful and well thought out programme.

The band also give a warm welcome to our latest signing, Andy Cooper has joined the band on Bb Bass thus all seats are once again taken with a full compliment of Brass players plus 5 percussionists.
A fabulous achievement in itself these days.

Congratulations to Helen Lewis, Roy Conway, Rachel Anderson, Matthew Williams and Darren Moses who all partook in their 1st Contest with the Boarshurst Silver Band. WELL DONE EVERYONE.

4 Bars Rest say the following:-

Confidence.

If it was a question of confidence then Boarshurst Silver may well have taken first prize.
The was solid playing full of good old fashioned basic virtues and everyone playing their part,
including the third percussionist beating out the rhythm for her fellows players to ensure they kept in time.

Adjudicator Glyn Williams said,
'THE TOP THREE PRIZEWINNERS PRODUCED PERFORMANCES OF QUALITY AND MUSICAL MERIT',
and this was certainly one of them. 4barsrest.

Uppermill Concert, 13th September 2009.

'The Best Concert That We Have Had This Year'.

I suppose that that would be the best thing that any band would like to hear.
Well that was the comment made by the organizers after we played our Concert at Uppermill Conservative Club on Sunday afternoon. All band members played extremely well and as a result we played great. Everyone played their part in a memorable afternoon. Well Done one and all.

Yorkshire Day 2009 Concert at the Navigation.

The 2nd August was this years Yorkshire Day celebrations in Saddleworth and as a result the Band played a top class concert at the Navigation Inn, Dobcross. Due to one or two regular band members being on holiday, a few deps were brought in. Each one being a very good friend of our M.D. Dave Ashworth.
Jason Evans, Mark Rodgers, Dave Woodward from Marsden Band, Steve Gardener, Solo Horn with Hebden Bridge, David Mansfield from Uppermill,Victoria Kenworthy from Eccles Borough and especially Mark Marsh who travelled up from Blandford Forum in Dorset to spend the weekend with the band. Mark plays Soprano with Verwood Concert Brass. To all who gave up their valuable time to help us. We thank you.

Saddleworth Folk Festival 2009.

The Saddleworth Folk Festival took place in Uppermill and surrounding areas over the past weekend. The very sucessful weekend started with a Gala Evening on Friday and the official opening at the Civic Hall on Satyrday morning. With the band leading everyone down to the Village Park.

Boarshurst Silver Band performed their annual concert at the Civic Hall, which was very well attended and apprieciated by all.

Nothing Better Than A Full Trophy Cabinet.

What a wonderful sight to behold, at the end of our first year with our
M.D.David W Ashworth, the Trophy Cabinet at the rear of the Main concert Room in the Boarshurst Band Club.

Now that all the Trophies and Prizes have been collected from a very successful Whit Friday Evening, it is somewhat full to bursting point.

The bottom left hand area contains all of the Trophies won on Whit Friday.
Above that is the Glassware section which contains the 2009 Tameside Champions Trophy.

This picture shows all of the silver ware won on the night.

WELL DONE BOARSHURST.

Success at Hebden Bridge.

Sunday 21st June saw the band playing at the 2nd Annual Hebden Bridge March and Hymn Contest. We played our Whit Friday March, 'RABY' and the Hymn 'MARYTON'.

3rd May 2009. Buxton Contest.

The Band had a great result on Sunday by getting 3rd Prize at the Buxton Contest.
We also received the NWBBA Trophy which is presented to the best North West Brass Band Association Member Band. We once again played The Dark Side of the Moon and this performance was, without question, the best performance that the band had played.

We are all very pleased to have beaten the two band who qualified for the National Finals.

26th April 2009. Holmfirth Contest.

Not the best result in the world but at least we are competeing.
On Sunday 26th April, the band competed at the Holme Valley Contest in Holmfirth Town Hall.
Drawn 4th, we played The Dark Side of the Moon, sections of which did not exactly go as planned, but we still finished up in 5th place.

9th April 2009. Road End Fair Concert and Presentation.

The Annual Road End Fair Concert took place on Maundy Thursday. The band played to a very apprieciable audience who applauded greatly when it was announced that the band won at the Tameside Contest.
Also on the evening the band presented Aimee Errocks with a parting gift. Aimee has had to leave the band to prepare to go to Newcastle University where she will study Law.

On the same evening our Musical Director David W Ashworth was presented with an award for 50 years service to the Brass Band movement.

29th March 2009. Tameside Contest.

Tameside Winners 2009

On a lovely sunny Sunday the band travelled down the road to take part in the Tameside Contest at Dukinfield Town Hall. Drawn last out of 6 bands, we performed sufficiently enough for the Adjudicator, Paul Andrews to award us 1st place in the 3rd Section. A very welcome moral boost for us and hopefully the start of things to come.

WELL DONE EVERYONE.

The contest saw the arrival of Abby Welsh our new 3rd cornet player, who at 10 years old and is our newest and youngest player. It also was a sad moment as Aimee Errock on solo Baritone left the band in order to make arrangements for her future education at Newcastle University. Congratulation and best wishes go with Aimee from all members and players of the Boarshurst Band.

9th February 2009. Brass at the Guild.

The band played at The Brass at the Guild Contest in Preston on Sunday 8th February and came a very creditable 7th place playing 'The Once and Future King', by Andrew Baker. This was the first contest outing of the band since the Tameside Contest in March 2008. With the new players just about settled in we gave a very strong performance and as a result of some very informative critique by the adjudicator, Peter Roberts, we have direction on what to work on for the Area contest at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool on 1st March. On a personal note may I give special mention to Aimee Errock, Billy Reynolds, Vicky Ashley and Rachael Boardman who were partaking in their first ever Senior Contest. An extra comment must go to Rachael who, apart from being very nervous actually played like she had been doing this sort of thing for years. Well done Rachael for a truely excellent performance. All I can say is bring on the Areas. Oh and hope one or two sore heads are better by Thursdays rehearsal. (We drank Preston dry).

13th January 2009.

FULL BAND NOW IT'S HARD GRAFT.

We are very pleased to welcome Matthew Goodman, Bb Bass, Barry Cottam,Tuned Percussion and Rachel Boardman, Soprano, to the band. These new signings complete a very strong line up.
Rachel takes over from Brian Evans who has had to stop playing due to a serious dental problem. Brian will still continue with the band assisting our M.D. with one to one tuition for players.

6th January 2009.

IT was with great pleasure that our M.D. Dave Ashworth introduced 7 new players at the first rehearsal of the band after the Festive Season break.
